Scrivener is the best program for organizing and developing your screenplay that I have ever seen.īottom line: any of these programs is much better than trying to write a screenplay in Word. IMHO, that's the best bang for your buck available, if you don't mind writing on an iPad. FadeInPro and WriterDuet are good substitutes for Final Draft at lower cost. If you want to save money, there are good alternatives. I have used FD for years, and have never lost any data. If you keep FD and your OS current, you are unlikely to experience any problems. This happens because the user doesn't want to pay for an upgrade, or perhaps is using a pirate copy of FD. The company was sold this year to Cast & Crew, and there's a new CEO who is very interested in making the best product.Ĭomplaints on this sub about crashing and lost data have to do with using an old version of FD with a newer version of the OS, primarily on Windows. The program did spontaneously shut down on me once or twice, but if you're coming from Word you probably save things compulsively. I've also encountered glitches where everything gets CAPS LOCKED AND YOU CAN'T TYPE LOWERCASE REGARDLESS OF SELECTING THE "ACTION" FORMAT (OR BY CLICKING THE "CAPSLOCK" BUTTON).
You can do all those things once you've figured it out, but IMO it could be much simpler (like, how come you can't just unclick "title page" to go back to the script part of your script? Or click "normal view," or "scene navigator" or something?") Namely: Editing the title page, navigating between open docs within the program, pulling your beat board up alongside the script.
I definitely write more, and I don't feel like I'm bullshitting people I say I write screenplays.ĭrawbacks: Some functions of FD are totally counter-intuitive. Before hand I'd been manually converting word docs to screenplay format.
